ZULU WAR 1879 RORKES DRIFT SHIELD & SPEAR uVe REGIMENT MAJOR DUNBAR 2/24th TROPHY

A RARE ZULU YOUNG WARRIERS SHIELD & SPEAR believed to be of the uVe Regiment – 3000 of which fought at Isandlwana on 21 January 1879 and then moved on to RORKES DRIFT many of these were used by the ZULU CHIEFTANS as “cannon fodder” to count the British firepower of the 24th Regiment stationed at the Drift
This Rare surviver is now rock hard with age and has an interesting triangular hole in it from a MARTINI HENRY SOCKET BAYONET – having tried an example it fits perfectly !
War Shields introduced by CETSHWAYO for young warriers were 3.5 feet long compared to the longer traditional War Shields Isihlangu and not to be mistaken for the smaller dancing shields
With good provinance this shield and spear was one of several Zulu war items from the collection of a deceased local zulu war collector all entered into auction by his widow and retains its auction invoice and lot ticket for 1983- having spent many years working in South Africa in the 1920 / 30s he ammassed a good collection
It originally had two spears crossed and wired on but this had lost one over the years and all wire has now been removed – this example retains a brass shield plaque with the wording ” RECOVERED AT RORKES DRIFT ZULULAND 1879 BY MAJOR DUNBAR 2/24TH ” included is an interesting nine page article relating to Officers & Men looting Zulu weapons and even bones as souvenirs and that Major Dunbar ammassed a huge collection with the 2/24th using brass shield plaques on relics
A unique oppertunity for the Zulu War Collector to add this to their collection
The animal fur bound around the top of the shield pole “insimba” may be an old replacement otherwise completly original and untouched
