THIS EXTREMELY SCARCE FRENCH NAPOLEONIC COCKERAL HILTED SAPPERS / PIONEERS SABRE WAS DISPLAYED IN OUR WATERLOO MUSEUM – 1987 – 1999 & CAME FROM THE COLLECTION OF JEANNE SULLY WHO PURCHASED IT AT THE SALE OF SERGEANT MAJOR EDWARD COTTONS WATERLOO MUSEUM IN 1909 AND IT RETAINS HALF OF ITS COTTON MUSEUM TAG – French – – – – – – Pioneers – – – — – Field – – ( OF WATERLOO ) AND LISTED IN HIS DETAILED LIST OF HIS MUSEUM COLLECTION IN THE BOOK HE WROTE ” A voice from waterloo” ITEM NUMBER 319
THE CURVED BLADE RETAINS SOME DECORATION AND HAS A CLIP BACK PIONT

Around 1 pm on 18th June 1815 the French attack advanced along the western side of Hougamont farm and actually reached the Northern Gate – – The Huge French Pioneer Lieuteant Legros ” nicknamed l , enforceur” suceeded in breaking down the wooden gate using his Pioneers axe and around 30 frenchmen managed to storm the courtyard but all but a small drummer boy were quickly despatched including Legros
Lieutenant Legros would also of carried a sword of this pattern – for all we know it could of been this example !
