A UNIQUE OPPERTUNITY TO AQUIRE THIS RARE 1796 LIGHT CAVALRY 7TH HUSSARS SABRE FROM THE COLLECTION OF SGT MAJOR EDWARD COTTON – SOLD OFF BY AUCTION IN 1909
SGT MAJOR COTTON SERVED IN THE 7TH HUSSARS AT THE BATTLE OF WATERLOO AND RAN HIS WATERLOO MUSEUM ON THE FIELD UNTILL HIS DEMISE IN 1849 – IT CONTINUED TO BE RUN BY HIS NIECES UNTILL IT WAS SOLD OFF IN 1909
IT IS MOST INTERESTING TO SURMISE THAT THIS SABRE WAS HIS OWN CARRIED ON 18 JUNE 1815 HAVING A PLEASING PATINA OVERALL & IN ITS STEEL SCABBARD – HILT & SCABBARD WITH PITTING –
THE STEEL STIRRUP HILT RETAINS ITS GRIP LEATHER COVERING – THE BLADE HAVING MAKERS NAME ON THE BACKEDGE – EGG – THE KNUCKLEBOW WITH REGIMENTAL MARKINGS – 7 H – A – 8 – ( 7th Hussars – Troop A – Sabre 8 ) COTTON WAS IN (A )TROOP !
