THIS UNIQUE 1796 LIGHT CAVALRY SABRE FROM THE HISTORIC WATERLOO MUSEUM COLLECTION OF EDWARD COTTON WHICH WAS SOLD BY AUCTION IN 1909 WAS ON DISPLAY IN OUR BROADSTAIRS WATERLOO MUSEUM COLLECTION FROM 1987 – 1999 AND HAS BEEN IN STORAGE SINCE

THIS EXAMPLE IS ONE PICKED UP BY COTTON SOME YEARS AFTER THE BATTLE IN WHICH HE FOUGHT WITH THE 7th HUSSARS DUE TO THE CONDITION OF THE HILT AND SCABBARD WHICH HAS PROTECTED THE BLADE IN AMAZING CONDITION RETAINING A GOOD POLISH WITH CLEAR INSPECTORS STAMP – IT HAS NUMBER OF EDGE KNICKS FROM CAMPAIGN SERVICE AND MUCH USAGE ON 18th JUNE 1815

IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT BRITAIN EXPORTED SIX THOUSAND 1796 L/C SABRES TO PRUSSIA IN 1807 AND ANOTHER TEN THOUSAND IN 1813 WHICH WERE USED BY THE PRUSSIAN CAVALRY DURING THE NAPOLEONIC WARS UP TO 1815 AND DUE TO ITS SUCCESS THEY MANUFACTURED THEIR OWN COPY KNOWN AS THE 1811 BLUTCHER SABRE BUT IT IS NOW KNOWN THAT PRODUCTION DID NOT START UNTILL LATE 1815 AND ALL PRUSSIAN CAVALRY AT WATERLOO WOULD OF CARRIED THE BRITISH 1796
