IRISH EASTER RISING DUBLIN BAYONET 1916

This Totally Unique Bayonet was recovered from the Burnt Remains of the GENERAL POST OFFICE in DUBLIN after the EASTER RISING in 1916 – it has burnt encrustation overall from having been in the fierce fire and the grips have burnt away however A RARE SURVIVER and aquired many years ago from a pal in Dublin whos grandfather recovered it at the time and had been in the family since – the blade has the remains of the original contemporary handwritten label which appears part missing giving the details – ” – – – M.G.P OFFICE – EASTER WEEK – W.J.SHERWIN – ”
The General Post office Dublin was the HEADQUARTERS of the REBELS during the 1916 EASTER RISING & came under ferocious ARTILLERY attack – the rebels led by PATRICK PEARSE & JAMES CONNOLLY chose the GPO the communications heart of the country and the centre of Dublin City as the building on which to hoist the flag of an Irish Republic and for a week from April 24th to 29th the rebels held the GPO -Fighting here and in other parts of the city was intense with civilians bearing the greatest hardship – with the building on fire and crumbling they tried to break through the surrounding arms cordon but failed – Pearse realising the futility of further fighting took the decision to surrender –
